Shocked residents were led to safety after a fire engulfed five bedsits, leaving them heavily smoke-logged and damaged.

The fire started in a bedsit on the first floor of a large property in Agate Road, Clacton, at 1.20pm yesterday.

Firefighters were called to the scene by a resident living on the first floor who heard the fire alarm.

The woman, who did not wish to be named, said: "The first I knew is that the fire alarm went off. I went out to have a look and the corridor was filled with thick black smoke, and it was just pouring out of the flat opposite.

"I knocked on the door and there was no answer, so I phoned the fire brigade."

The occupant of the ground floor flat said he was shocked to return home from a dental appointment to see smoke billowing out.

Police cordoned off the road at both ends while firefighters dealt with the blaze and conducted an investigation into how the fire started.

started, thought to be a man in his 40s, was believed to be out for the day and was unavailable for comment.
