A FORMER councillor and South Ockendon football legend was presented with the an award to honour his dedication.

Chris Baker received the award at the Thurrock Association Sunday Leagues AGM at Tilbury Town Football Club to recognise his 50 years of service to football.

The former Thurrock Independents Councillor has also received a letter from Greg Clarke to congratulate him on his work. Alec Berry presented him with the award on behalf of the Football Association.

Chris Baker said: "I am incredibly grateful to receive such a fantastic award and be recognised for the work I have been doing. I must say it doesn't feel like it has been 50 years, I still think I could put the boots on and give some of the lads in the Premier League a run for their money.

"I have found my involvement in football incredibly rewarding and I would like to thank everyone who I have played alongside, volunteered alongside and managed alongside over that time. It has been fantastic to see many of the young people I have been involved with go on and make a success of themselves in our community and elsewhere.

"With the World Cup going on I would encourage anyone who thoroughly enjoys it to consider taking up coaching, volunteering or just going along and supporting their local football teams of all levels and ages. Good luck to England, lets bring it home!"
