YOUNGSTERS raced through sub-zero temperatures to raise money for Sport Relief.

A total of 56 children aged between four and 14 took on the challenge last weekend as part of the fundraising campaign, which runs between March 17 and 23.

The Hawkwell Junior Parkrunners meet up every Sunday morning at Clements Hall Recreation Ground with regular and new runners.

Event director Lisa Weir said: “We were so proud of all of our runners, parents and volunteers who braved the cold for Sport Relief this weekend.

“We were really lucky that the conditions didn’t affect the safety of our event as this is always our priority, but our runners soon warmed up as they ran, walked and jogged the 2km course.

“Hawkwell Junior Parkrun is, and always will be completely free, but it was a great opportunity to get together for a worthy cause and the hot drinks and cakes really helped warm everyone up on such a cold morning.”

Volunteers donated cakes and Tesco in Rayleigh donated tea, coffee and biscuits.
