A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape following an incident near Basildon town centre.
The victim, who is in her 30s, had been on a night out with friends, when a man who she had met earlier that evening offered to walk her home.
When they got to the globe statue in the town centre, he threatened and raped the victim.
The victim was able to get to safety and is currently being supported by specialist officers.
A 35-year-old man from Basildon arrested on suspicion of rape has been released on bail until April 10.
