Up to 65 workers at a recycling plant in Tilbury are at risk of losing their jobs after the firm told their staff they are at possible risk of redundancy.

An employee at the Suez Recycling and Recovery UK branch on Tilbury Docks contacted the Gazette informing us of that the firm is intending to close.

The employee, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “The closure of Suez recycling on Tilbury Docks was announced today.

“All workers are expected to lose their jobs by Christmas.”

Following this tip-off, the Gazette approached the company for clarification.

They responded confirming that employees at the facility were at risk of redundancy but the decision is yet to be made.

Staff were informed of the possibility of losing their jobs during a meeting.

But they will not find out for definite whether their employment at the alternative fuel production facility will cease to continue until after a formal consultation process is conducted.

A spokesman for Suez Recycling and Recovery UK said: “We can confirm that we are considering options for the long-term future of our alternative fuels production facility at Tilbury Dock.

“Meetings were held last week with members of staff employed at the facility to inform them that they are at possible risk of redundancy.

“We are now going through a formal consultation process with individual employees.

“As such, no decisions about the future of the plant will be made until this consultation process has concluded.”

The recycling centre in Tilbury is part of the company Suez, which is a nationwide organisation that deals with recyclable waste in more than 300 locations throughout the UK.

Although it employs people locally, others who live nearby have complained about the recycling centre in the past because of the noise it generates.
