A RAYLEIGH car park is switching off its light at night in an attempt to combat anti-social behaviour.

Rochford District Council launched a pilot on August 15 to switch off the lights at the car park in Websters Way following complaints from residents surrounding the area of drivers gathering there.

Complaints were made to the council and Essex police by homeowners of being disturbed by loud music, cars revving and driving in a careless manner inside the car park behind Rayleigh High Street.

Mike Webb, Portfolio Holder for the Community at Rochford District Council, said: “This car park is being monitored and should drivers continue to cause a nuisance, they could be issued with formal notices. Drivers who ignore these warnings, can be fined, prosecuted or have their vehicle seized.”

Mr Webb also apologised to the residents surrounding Websters Way for the issues caused by the noise.
