A CANVEY pub will remain closed for mysterious reasons.

The Admiral Jellicoe, in High Street, closed suddenly at the beginning of March.

Regulars were left wondering what had happened after a hand written note appeared in the window announcing the pub was closed “for work.”

However, no refurbishments have been carried out and the doors remain closed.

A spokesman for Ei Publican Partnerships, which owns Brewery Enterprise Inns, which runs the pub, said: “We can confirm that the Admiral Jellicoe will remain closed for the time being. We would like to reassure members of the local community that we aim to reopen this site as soon as possible.”

In other Canvey pub news, Wetherspoon has said it is still looking to come to the town.

Rumours had been circulating that it was looking at the King Canute pub, but this still has planning permission to be turned into a Co-Op, with a vets opening up next door.

A spokesman for the Wetherspoon chain said: “Wetherspoon looked at the King Canute a while back and decided not to progress with it.

“We are still keen on opening a pub in the town.”

The company would not confirm if it was currently looking at any sites.

News of the possibility of the cheap pub chain coming to the island has had mixed reactions, but a previous petition calling on the chain to open attracted more than 400 signatures.
