A MAYOR was assaulted following a disagreement after a council meeting, it is alleged.

David Harrison was allegedly assaulted after a meeting in June.

The alleged incident occurred in a corridor at the Basildon Centre on June 14 and was reported to police on the same evening.

The council’s website shows that a planning meeting was held at the council officers that night.

Don Morris, Conservative councillor for Wickford Castledon, said he was astounded to find out this had allegedly happened.

He added: “I did not see any assault take place or anything like that so I don’t know exactly what took place after that meeting. I find it very strange really that this took place.

“We are all politicians here and we all have our own views but we are here for the same reason.”

An Essex Police spokesman said: “We are investigating an allegation of assault, which happened at the Basildon Centre, Town Square, on June 14, following a meeting at around 6.30pm.

“That investigation is ongoing and the victim, a man aged in his 70s, is fully up to date with our inquiries. We are progressing matters to contact witnesses and take statements from them.”

Basildon Council has been contacted for comment.
