CALLS for safety measures at an accident blackspot have been renewed after a biker suffered back and pelvic injuries.

The collision at the junction of Eastern Avenue and Bournemouth Park Road, Southend, at about 6pm on Wednesday is the fifth at the site his year.

Brian Ayling, independent councillor for St Luke’s ward, has called for speed cameras.

He said: “It seems impossible to get anything done. The speed of traffic along that road has been a problem for years.

“My understanding is as an accident blackspot three people have got to die before we do something.

“They have these certain rules and regulations but they are pretty nonsensical.

“I think we have had four in the past three months and it’s amazing there haven’t been more because that crossover is dangerous.

“The traffic flies around that corner and everybody is in hurry these days.

“The only way you can slow them down is with a camera. They seem to have them on London Road and Royal Artillery Way and the A127 but for some reason they don’t seem to want them here.

“They talk about cost, but the costs shouldn’t be significant when you are talking about people’s lives.”

Fellow councillor Paul Van Looy wants the junction to be closed off.

He said the latest crash was so severe, witnesses initially believes the biker had died at the scene.

Mr Van Looy said: “You have got a turn off at Bournemouth Park Road and that’s where it happened.

“I know of three in a year there now. That turn off needs to be shut off completely.

“If you want to go down Bournemouth Park Road there is a roundabout a few yards away.”

Figures released by the ambulance service earlier this year, under Freedom of Information laws, show crews treated seven patients in the road between November 2014 and January 2016.

The most recent crash happened on Friday, May 27 this year when a biker was airlifted to hospital with serious leg and head injuries after colliding with a Renault Megane.
