SALVATION Army supporters walked from Southend to Basildon to raise funds for the group's ongoing charity work.

Five members of the Basildon branch met up on Saturday for the 11-mile trek, setting off from Southend Victoria railway station at 10.30am.

Walking at the speed of their slowest member, the group arrived in St Martin's Square, in Basildon town centre, at 3.30pm.

Kate Gregory, commanding officer of Basildon Salvation Army, gave heart-warming thanks to Peter Covey, of Wells Gardens, Basildon, for arranging the event.

She added: “It’s encouraging to know there are people out there who will go above and beyond for our cause.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to Peter Covey for arranging the walk, and everyone else who took part.”

The walkers have encouraged sponsorship for their effort, with a combined fundraising target of £150 to support the work of the Basildon Salvation Army Corps.

The commanding officer added: "Every pound makes a difference. £50 enables us to buy a clean bed or washing machine or cooker for a person in a new home, £10 buys a family a three-day food bag and £1 supports a lonely person for a coffee and fellowship afternoon."
