Three south Essex MPs will vote for air strikes to loosen Islamic State’s grip on Syria.

David Cameron will tomorrow (Thurs) set out his case for the UK to join air strikes against the terrorist group, also known as Isis, Isil and Daesh, before an expected Commons vote on military action.

The move comes in the light of the terrorist atrocities in Paris earlier this month.

Tory MPs Jackie Doyle-Price, Stephen Metcalfe and Rebecca Harris all say they will vote in favour of air strikes.

But fellow Conservative Basildon and Billericay MP John Baron, who led a successful Tory revolt back in 2013, insists air strikes would not defeat Islamic State.

He called on the Government to conside a grand counter-terrorism strategy with its allies, as well as Iran and Russia.

But in a view at odds with his neighbouring MP, Mr Metcalfe said: “In light of the atrocities in Paris, I back a renewed call for increased military intervention, both in terms of additional airstrikes in Syria and additional support for the Kurds in Northern Iraq, I will therefore vote in favour of action as and when the time comes.

“Even prior to Paris, it was becoming increasing clear to me that we needed to do more to tackle this evil group and their warped and brutal philosophy.

“I now think the time for action has come.”

Speaking in the Commons, Mr Metcalfe compared the UK’s stance on Syria akin to that of a football team not trying to win a game.

Mrs Harris, Tory MP for Castle Point, said: “I visited Syria before the civil war and have been disgusted by the actions of the Assad Government and the growing tide of IS.

“I would fully support air strikes that would loosen the hold of Islamic State in Syria.”

Thurrock MP Miss Doyle-Price said: “I will be voting again for air strikes against ISIL. For our own security and for the good of humanity this enemy must be defeated.”

But Southend West MP Sir David Amess, who joined Mr Baron’s rebellion against the then-Coalition Government, has indicated he may vote differently this time – but will await full details from his party’s leader.

The Prime Minister is expected to unveil his full plan of action for airstrikes in Syria tomorrow (Thurs Nov 26), and a vote could be put to the Commons next week.

Some Labour MPs have called on leader Jeremy Corbyn to give them a free vote.

Sir David said: “The situation today is quite different - the Government seems to have rethought its view of President Bashar al-Assad, Russia now appears to have agreed to get involved in the conflict and the United Nations has unanimously decided to support the allies’ involvement in Syria.”

But Mr Baron said: “Absent a ‘grand strategy’ to destroy Daesh, I would be reluctant to vote for RAF air strikes in Syria.

“This strategy must be inclusive of the whole international community, and must also operate at a non-military level.

“If we are to defeat Daesh, we must disrupt its business and financial links, and counteract its prominence on social media.”
