HUNDREDS of people turned out for the second Leigh Maritime Festival.

Families flocked to the town to enjoy music from the Yardam folk orchestra and shanties from the Hoy Shanty Crew.

Children were entertained with a Punch and Judy show, as well as a magic show and crabbing on Strand Wharf.

Artefacts from HMS London were on display following the recent dive and the Lower Thames Rowing Club annual pier race also got under way.

The event, which closed Leigh High Street, was free, but collections were held for the RNLI.

Richard Herbert, chairman of Leigh Town Council, said: “It’s gone brilliantly and has been a lovely family occasion.

“It’s packed-out and there are a lot of happy people enjoying themselves and hundreds of boats on the water.

“There will definitely be one again next year, it’s been a perfect day and a huge success.”
