Summary

Policing budget decided today

Our live feed has now finished.

  • Police and Crime Commissioner Nick Alston will be putting his budget proposals to the police and crime panel.
  • He is asking for a two per cent increase in the part of council tax which goes towards policing – or about £3 per home.
  • The money will go towards limiting the number of officer jobs which will be lost due to Government cuts of another £8.5million in 2015/16.
  • More police stations are also expected to close and police buildings sold.
  • Essex Police Federation believe Government cuts are destroying the ability of the force to function properly.
  • Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh accepts the cuts make policing difficult.
  • Mr Alston is hoping the panel will agree to the rise to limit the damage.
