LIBRARIES in Thurrock could close as part of a cost cutting exercise from the council.

The mobile library service could also be axed in proposals included in a month long consultation looking at ways in which Thurrock Council can save £500,000 from its budget.

The consultation, which runs until Sunday, February 15, discusses four main proposals, including reducing the number of libraries and creating a smaller network; closing down the mobile library service, which has low usage, but continuing with the popular Homelink Service and developing shared delivery of services with community hubs.

The fourth suggestion would see volunteers step forward to run the libraries and to seek funding to support them.

Some changes have already taken place, including the sharing of library buildings with community hubs in South Ockendon and Chadwell St Mary, but the council say further savings are needed.

Paper copies of the consultation documents are available by asking at local libraries or people can complete the consultation online by going to the libraries section of the council’s website www.thurrock.gov.uk/libraries
