ONE of the biggest ships in the world - and largest to ever sail on the River Thames - docked at London Gateway.
The Edith Maersk, which is 397 metres long - the same length as almost FOUR football pitches - docked at the port just after 6am on Sunday morning.
The enormous vessel, which is 56 metres wide, can carry 15,500 standard shipping containers. Its arrival at the £1.5billion Stanford-le-Hope superport means it is the biggest ship to ever venture up the River Thames.
It was directed beneath the booms of the giant quay cranes by the Port of London Authority's pilot boats.
It is due to leave the port at 9pm tonight, when it will leave for Singapore, and is transporting good such as clothes and electronics.
The arrival of the ship comes just weeks before the port's one-year anniversary.
