THOUSANDS of ice cream lovers flocked to Garon Park, Southend, to take part in a world record attempt.
Organisers of the Relay for Life and Rossi Ice Cream bosses teamed up to break the record for the longest chain of people licking ice creams.
It is thought some 2,000 people turned up for the event on Saturday, but organisers are waiting for officials from the Guinness Book of World Records to find out if the record – 2,728 – was broken.
With Rossi boss Colin Gray giving out free ice cream, organisers are hopeful they have smashed the record.
Mr Gray has supported the Relay for Life for the past six years.
He said: “It’s been brilliant to see so many people to turn out and support this event for such an important cause.
“I want to say a big thank you to all the volunteers and people who made the event and the record attempt possible.
“I’m not able to confirm at this stage if we have broken the record, but let’s hope we have.
“It’s been a fantastic day. I had cancer 20 years ago so this is very close to my heart. We’ve donated all the ice cream for the attempt and all money from the ice cream van today will go to Cancer Research.”
