A HOST of Harwich’s top historic attractions opened their doors to the public for a national event.

The National Heritage Weekend sees sites across the UK welcome thousands of guests who are able to learn all about their history for free.

The Harwich Society opened all its visitor attractions on both Saturday and Sunday.

Visitors were able to look around the Redoubt Fort, the Radar Tower, the High Lighthouse, the Lifeboat Museum, the Maritime Museum, the Ha’Penny Pier Visitor Centre, and the Wheel Crane.

As part of the weekend the society opened up its headquarters – the 15th century Foresters in Church Street – for the first time.

Walking tours also allowed those descending on the town to learn more about the maritime town.

Harwich Society chairman, Colin Farnell, said the weekend was very successful.

He said: “It was an absolutely brilliant event.

“There were people from all over the place who came to see the attractions.

“The High Lighthouse had more than 100 people visit it on the Sunday and the weather stayed great all weekend which helped.

“Foresters was open for the first time and people were so pleased to see inside one of the town’s oldest houses.”
