A pair of best friends are hosting a charity football match in memory of a former ladies player who died suddenly aged 23.

Danielle Moore and Vanessa Caulkett have organised Kayleigh's Charity Football Match in honour of former Bramston School pupil Kayleigh Griffiths, who passed away after suffering an unexpected cardiac arrest in July, 2017.

All of the proceeds from the event will be put towards a special memorial fund run by Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), in honour of Miss Griffiths.

Miss Moore, a resident of Feering, said: "She was on holiday around the pool and suffered a cardiac arrest.

"It was because of an undiagnosed heart condition which is why we are trying to raise awareness of CRY.

"Her fund will provide heart screenings for anyone aged between 14 and 26. The charity would then refer them for further help if needed.

"If Kayleigh had taken the test she would have been on medication for her condition.

"She would have been 25 in August, which is why we're holding the event then."

Before her death, Miss Griffiths was a big footie fan and played for Witham Ladies and Silver End Ladies.

Miss Moore said: "Kayleigh played for Witham Town Ladies which is why the club has been so kind and given the premises for us to use.

"She always played football from when she was tiny. She loved it up there at the football club.

"The three of us grew up together as best friends.

"We used to do everything together from playing outside around Witham with our older siblings to our first girls' holiday.

"It has been very difficult since Kayleigh passed."

Family members, including mum and dad Wendy and Leon, have raised cash for the fund in the past with events including a seven mile long walk across the bridges of London.

The latest fundraiser, which takes place at the club, in Spa Road, on Sunday, August 26, will be much more than a football match, with two matches including a veterans game, bouncy castles, food, face painting and a fun day feel.

There will also be a disco which is set to go on late into the evening.

Miss Moore said: "We have already sold around 200 tickets so we are hoping it will be a really good day.

"Hopefully it will become an annual event."

The gates for the event open at 11.30am on Sunday, August 26.
