A rotary club held a classic car rally across the varied countryside of north and mid Essex.

The Rotary Club of Kelvedon and District's fourth annual rally kicked off from the village before making its way across Colchester.

The rally, which is open to modern vehicles as well as older classic motors, then travelled through Earls Colne and Halstead to Wickham St Paul.

Roadworks caught out drivers on the A1124 and a diversion forced them the long way round through to Braintree and Great Dunmow.

A much needed pit stop followed after the 50 mile trip, with many of the 23 drivers having completed the distance without power steering.

A spokesman for the Rotary Club of Kelvedon and District said: "The rally is not intended as a major fund-raising event, the aim is to have a fun day and raise the awareness of Rotary.

"However the Rotary Club does try to make a small profit from the event.

"Last year over £800 was raised on the day and was sent to the charity CRY – Cardiac Risk in the Young – as our President’s young grand-daughter had recently died from a heart condition.

"This year all the money raised will be put towards our rotary charitable activities and will be used to support worthwhile causes and international projects."

A total for this year's event has not yet been calculated.

The club meets every Tuesday at The Blue Anchor, Feering Hill, from 7pm.
