A MAN has suffered a serious head injury after a car crashed off the road.
Emergency services were called to Maypole Road between Heybridge and Wickham Bishops at 6am this morning.
A white Volkswagen Scirocco was in a collision with a tree and came to rest in a ditch.
The driver, a man in his 20s, has suffered serious head injuries along with multiple other injuries and has was taken to Broomfield Hospital for treatment.
Two fire engines from Maldon were called to the scene at 6.05am and assisted paramedics to release the man from the vehicle by 6.50am.
A spokesman for the ambulance service said: "The East of England Ambulance Service were called to reports of an RTC involving a car that had hit a tree on Maypole Road this morning at approximately 6.00am.
"An ambulance and an ambulance car were sent.
"On arrival they found one male patient in his 20’s who was trapped in the vehicle, he was extricated with assistance from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service and taken to Broomfield hospital with multiple injuries."
Pc Nigel Taplin, from the Stanway Roads Policing Unit said: “We believe the driver left his home address at around 5am.
“We are keen to speak to anyone who saw the car driving along Maypole Road just before the time of the crash or saw the vehicle after it had come to rest in the ditch.
“A young man is seriously injured and we need to find out how the crash happened.”
