A CHARITY are asking do-gooders to take part in a special appeal to help provide food for those in crisis.

The Braintree Area Foodbank, collects food in Halstead, Braintree and Witham.

This year the charity is asking that instead of giving up a specific luxury for Lent, supports put 40p aside each day.

Over the 40 days, this would mean each individual collects £16, which is how much is costs the charity to supply one food parcel.

The money is used to keep warehouses going, pay running costs and keep the delivery van of the foodbank on the road.

In 2017, the foodbank is hoping to roll out two new projects, the Food in School Holidays scheme (FISH) and the Eat Well Spend Less campaign.

Funding is already in place to start the schemes, however money is needed going forward for running costs.

A spokesman for the foodbank said: "By taking part in our 40p for 40 days campaign you really will really make such a difference to families and individuals who are faced with food poverty through no fault of their own."

Donations can be made via a standing order, an online donations page or by making a cheque payable to the Braintree Area Foodbank.
