A DOMESTIC abuse survivor is urging women to use Clare’s Law after being beaten and harassed by her ex-boyfriend.

Kimberley Crane, 29, was beaten by her then boyfriend and repeat offender Alexander Clare, 28.

When Miss Crane made a desperate 999 call, officers rushed to her house and told her she could have used the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, known as Clare’s Law.

Officers revealed her ex-boyfriend, of Hawthorne Rise, Witham, had been convicted for attacking another girlfriend in May last year.

Miss Crane fears she may not have called police and ended the brief relationship had she not been protective towards her children.

She said: “I just want to raise awareness of the law, even if I could save one person from going through this.

“The abuse started three or four weeks into the relationship, when he started being aggressive towards me.

“He threw my phone at me so hard it smashed, he bit me because I wouldn’t sleep with him, he threw bottles of water at me and he would push me against the wall.

“One time I had got ready for a night out and was doing the dishes.

“He got a handful of dishwater and rubbed it in my face to wash my make up off and told me I wasn’t going out.”

Clare’s Law came into use in March 2014 and allows the public to request information about someone they believe is at risk of being violent towards a partner.

Mother-of-one Clare Woods, 36, was murdered by an ex-boyfriend with a history of violence towards women.

Miss Crane, who has a daughter, six, and son, three, said: “The sentences for assault need to be tougher.

“He’s been on a Builder Better Relationships course as part of his previous sentence, but he doesn’t take it seriously.

“I have had people from the safeguarding team come in and talk about putting a safe room in my house and have given me panic alarms.

“I would sleep on the sofa, because if he came into my house my daughter’s room is the nearest one.

“It’s sad to say but if I didn’t have the children I would probably still be with him thinking it’s normal.”

Clare has previously admitted offences against Miss Crane and another partner including four charges of assault, four charges of criminal damage, and twice failing to comply with a community order.

He admitted two charges of harassment at Colchester Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday.

The court heard the former soldier breached a restraining order by sending her a ‘x’ on a text and two more messages on January 9.

He sent her a a full stop on Instagram on January 11, which meant his picture turned up on her account.

The latest two offences were committed just days after Clare was given a suspended sentence for offences against Miss Crane.

Selena Dines, mitigating, said: “Around 2007 to 2012 he was concerned in a tour of Afghanistan.

“In 2015 his friend was found dead.

“It was not related but that that brought distress and post traumatic stress disorder.

“He is under psychiatric help from the NHS.

“He is always concerned about the threat of terrorism, something which concerns him at all times.”

District Judge John Woollard said: “He is now in breach of every sentence ever made against him.”

Clare was bailed to be sentenced at the same court on March 14.
