AN activity programme has been launched to cater for those with and without learning disabilities.
Fusion Lifestyle, the charity responsible for Witham Leisure Centre, has teamed up with Sport For Confidence to launch a sport and physical activity programme for people with and without learning disabilities.
Launched at the start of November, Sport For Confidence sessions will initially run with multi-sports and boccia sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday respectively from 2pm to 3pm, with a view to expand the programme as interest grows.
Participants signing up to the sessions get involved in a number of sporting activities, supported by a qualified learning disabilities health specialist.
Lyndsey Barrett, senior occupational therapist and founder of Sport For Confidence, said: "We are working closely with community health professionals including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, community learning disabilities teams and community nursing teams.
"Many of our participants are expected to be directed to the sessions by their community teams who will use the sessions as part of their assessments and interventions.
"Sessions are relaxed, friendly and practical, focusing on social, mental and physical skill development. All abilities and tastes are catered for."
A similar programme has been running in Basildon at the Sporting Village for a year and attracts more than 100 participants attending daily sessions every week.
Participants attend on a session by session basis so there is no upfront fee or long-term commitment.
