SAMARITANS are hoping to be able to reach more people than ever before with the help of their new customised van.

The Colchester branch of the charity which provides 24/7 support for people feeling distressed has purchased the new vehicle, thanks to generous donations and grants from local groups and members of the public.

Director Carol Almond, said she believes the group will now be able to help more people in coastal areas.

She said: "Owning our Samaritans centre on wheels, which will be deployed as a pop-up branch to specific events and regular locations outside Colchester, will enable us to significantly increase the scope of our service and enhance the assistance we can provide to people needing our support.

“Over the past couple of years we have identified a need for a Samaritans presence in coastal towns such as Clacton and Walton.

"Now we have a mobile Samaritans Centre, it will mean we can reach out to far more people.

"In the few weeks we have had our van, we have already made many visits to Clacton town centre and to Walton market.

"It is such a great way to advertise our presence, and ensure that people know that we are here to help.”

The group is holding a launch event on Wednesday evening.

Samaritans can be contacted 24/7, 365 days of the year by calling the free-to-call number 116 123
