THE children’s unit at Colchester General Hospital might not be the place most youngsters usually want to go.
But it was smiles all round there this week as activities were put in place to celebrate National Play in Hospital Week.
The week is an opportunity for hospitals, hospices and community teams to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of play.
Activities in Colchester General Hospital have included a junk modelling session, an appearance from clown doctors and a teddy bears’ picnic.
Clare Sharp, one of Colchester hospital’s play specialists, said: “Play is a vital part of the care we offer to children and young people.
“National Play in Hospital Week is a brilliant chance for us to raise awareness of the importance of play for children in hospital and showcase the positive impact that play and distraction can have on a young patient’s hospital experience.
“It also gives our patients, their families and our staff the chance to enjoy an array of fun-filled activities.”
There are six hospital play specialists and one play assistant at Colchester General Hosptial.
The play specialists work in the children’s unit and in other departments of the hospital where children go.
