BRAINTREE'S iconic high street water fountain could soon be restored to its full glory.

Businesses and visitors to the town centre have noticed in recent months that the fountain by St Michael's Church on Braintree High Street has been empty.

The fountain, which until November 2015 was maintained by Braintree Council, has been given back to the Braintree and Bocking Recreation Grounds Trust, who are hopeful that it should be filled again in the not too distant future.

Robert Thomas, of the Braintree and Bocking Recreation Ground Trust, said: "The trust are now responsible for the fountain but we are in a bit of a state of change at the moment.

"For a good number of years the fountain was maintained on our behalf by the council.

"We have got one or two issues we need to get sorted first, but hopefully soon we can get it back up and running, we never intended to have it shut down for so long.

"As a charity we have two big hurdles that we are constantly trying to get over, one of which is funding and the other big problem we have is as a charity all the trustees have got full time jobs.

"We have discussed the idea of looking for sponsors who are prepared to take on the gardens by the fountain."
