A HUGELY successful eleventh season has brought Maldon’s very own Film Club back to the town next week.

Maldon Film Club will open its doors at the Town Hall on Market Hill on Tuesday, with their new season beginning with the award winning Brooklyn.

The film, which tells the story of a young woman who departs Ireland for the shores of New York, stars Saoirse Ronan who received numerous nominations and awards for her role as Eilis Lacey.

The club works on a membership basis and is run by a committee that selects and screens an annual programme of 18 films from the best of recent English and foreign language releases plus one “classic”.

The price of an annual subscription is just £25 which entitles members to free admission to all of the season’s 19 films, which works out as less than £1.32 per film.

Brooklyn kicks off the programme for the 2016/17 season which covers a wide variety of themes with films from different regions of the world. This includes Selma, La Cage aux Folles, Phoenix, Neerja, Room, The New Girlfriend and Theeb, which was nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA for best foreign language film.

The season continues until May 24 next year with films being shown fortnightly on Tuesdays in 2016 and Wednesdays in 2017.

As a member you will be asked to give your reaction to the films you have seen and also help the committee compile the programme for the following season. Membership is open to all and new members will be made very welcome.

Junior members aged 16-18 who are in full time education are also welcome at the reduced price of £15, though these spaces are limited.

The Film Club has now been running since 2005, with membership numbers rising to 149, the highest level since 2012.

Brooklyn will be shown on Tuesday at the Town Hall with doors opening at 7.15pm, with wine and soft drinks available from 7.30pm, with the film beginning at 8pm.

Those wanting to join can pay their seasons subscription on the night, and guests are welcome for just £3 per film showing.
