TRAVELLERS passing through Stansted Airport are sure to find themselves in the holiday spirit, thanks to some Witham students.

Four Year 10 students from New Rickstones Academy, in Conrad Road, joined forces with Year 4 and 5 pupils at Silver End Primary to produce murals on aviator Amy Johnson.

As part of the Herne Bay Project, children at the primary school have been focusing on the story of Amy, who died in WWII over the shores of Kent.

Art teacher Kara Morton said: “We were asked to create our own composition to celebrate the life, achievements and world records of the female aviator, Amy Johnson.

“The students worked tirelessly to complete the canvases in just one day. The standard of work was so high and the efforts made by all pupils were of such an impressive quality we even managed to produce more than expected.

“It’s great for children to work on large scale projects together like this. In GCSE art, there isn’t much opportunity to work together as everything they do is assessed as individuals.”

Gifted and talented art students from New Rickstones – Darcey Spenner, Jakub Drawert, Casey Cash and Betsy Goodfellow – took part. The artwork will be displayed in the education area of the airport.
