REPORTS of rapes in Essex have increased significantly, but experts say it is just the tip of the iceberg.

There were 149 reported rapes on adults in 2015/16, up 50 per cent in three years.

There were 89 reported child rapes, double the number from 2012/13.

Helen Parr, director of the Colchester-based Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse, estimates 15 per cent of victims who approach them go to the police.

She said: “The increase in the figures is largely due to an increase in awareness, although we are still regularly shocked by the attitude of some who think the woman is to blame for her behaviour.

“Child sexual assaults have had a raised profile and victims are becoming more confident in coming forward.”

Steps are being taken by the justice system to provide greater support for victims.

Ms Parr said: “Going through court is extremely traumatic and it may not lead to a conviction. We work closely with Essex Police to make things better for victims, but there is still a long way to go.”

Roger Hirst, crime commissioner, said: “The evidence suggests sexual offences are under-reported and it is important victims have the confidence to speak to police or specialist support agencies.”
