BURNHAM'S litter louts have been warned they will be caught and fined if they keep spoiling the town's public spaces.

Areas including Burnham Quay and a private pontoon have been highlighted by angry residents and councillors as rubbish hotspots.

Last week, the pontoon and the water surrounding it was covered in plastic bottles, chip wrappers and forks, crisp packets, plastic cake boxes, socks, crabbing lines, a towel and even a muddy pair of knickers. Now, Maldon District Council's community protection team, formerly the park rangers, have been instructed to clamp down on those caught littering.

Burnham Town Mayor Ron Pratt said: “It is very disappointing that those that are enjoying themselves at the facilities we have in this town are leaving litter behind them and ruining it for others.

“They are welcome to use these places but they need to take back what they bring with them and not leave it lying around for others to deal with.

“The protection team have been told that if they catch anyone for littering, those people will be fined.

“But I think the important thing is for everyone to remember that if you create litter it is your responsibility to take it home with you afterwards.”

A Maldon District Council said: “The council makes every effort to ensure our public open spaces are clean for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. The council’s Community Protection team will not hesitate in issuing an £80 fixed penalty notice to those who feel it is acceptable to drop litter or leave dogs mess in public areas.”

Anyone witnessing litter or fly-tipping on public land can call 01621 854477 or visitmaldon.gov.uk/report.

The spokesman said: “It is helpful if the council can be provided with as much information as possible, so that we can make sure our officers are in the right place at the right time to catch any offenders.”
