A MAN has been arrested after providing a positive breath test following a crash on the A12 involving five people.

Essex Police were called to the southbound A12, between Witham and Hatfield Peverel, shortly after midnight.

A blue Vauxhall Zafira travelling towards London had left the road and collided with trees.

The London-bound carriageway was closed from junction 22 to junction 25 for investigation work and HGVs were advised to use the A120 as a diversion route.

It took seven hours before the scene was cleared.

Five people, all from London, were taken to hospital.

One man suffered multiple injuries, which were described as life changing.

A 26-year-old man suffered a broken collarbone, a 30-year-old woman suffered head, back and arm injuries, a 31-year-old woman suffered head and pelvic injuries, and a 15-year-old girl suffered minor injuries.

Recovery vehicles removed the car at approximately 6am and closures on the road were lifted shortly before 7am, starting at junction 22.

The fire service was called to the scene to make it safe.

A 40-year-old man from Middlesex was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs and is currently in custody awaiting questioning.

Police said the man has been bailed until Friday, July 8, pending further enquiries.
