POLICE are looking for a dangerous dog after a pet was savaged to death.

Tony Reilly, 32, was walking his three-year-old Jack Russell Reggie in a field between Harwich Road and Hazelton Road, Parsons Heath, Colchester, when it was attacked.

Mr Reilly had just arrived at the park with Reggie and his other dog Benson, on their leads.

Mr Reilly, a painter and decorator, said: “I heard this shouting.

I looked up and saw this huge dog racing towardsmy dog.

“I tried to pick Reggie up, but I wasn’t quick enough.

“I was striking the other dog around the head to try and get him to let go.”

Mr Reilly’s other dogmanaged to slip out of his lead and run off.

During the struggle the dog, believed to be an American pitbull, bit Mr Reilly’s hand, which is still swollen and bruised.

He said: “I don’t know how long the attack lasted. My adrenalin was pumping.

“Reggie was bleeding everywhere.

Hewas in complete shock and a lot of pain.

“It was awful just watching my dog getting mauled to death.

“I’m never going to forget it.”

The attacking dog’s owner tried to get it off. After he separated the animals, he said he was going to take his dog home and come back, but he did not return.

Mr Reilly took Reggie to the emergency vets, where he underwent a five-and-a-half hour operation, costing £4,500.

But Reggie died the following day. Mr Reilly said: “It was too much shock for him.”

The attack happened at about 7.30pm on Sunday.

Essex Police is investigating the attack and officers would like to speak to any witnesses.

The attacking dog was white with brown patches on its head.

Its owner had a shaved head and tattoos on his arm and legs.

He was between 5ft 8ins and 6ft and was wearing shorts and a T-shirt.
