A celebration of life will take place for a late Maldon artist who created an iconic bronze sculpture for the town.

Catharni Stern lived most of her life in Maldon and was commissioned to create a bronze relief of the Fat Man’s coat, which has long adorned the passageway leading up to the King’s Head Centre.

Other examples of her work are the St Francis sculptures in Chelmsford Cathedral and St Giles Church, Langford, plus the glass bell sign at the Bell House in Silver Street.

Catharni died aged 89 and is buried in the green cemetery in London Road.

There will be a celebration of her life on August 22, which would have been her 90th birthday, at the Friends Quaker Meeting House in Butt Lane at 2pm.
