A Good Samaritan who stopped to help a woman in distress was brutally beaten by three men in an unprovoked late-night attack.

Steve Arthur, 27, was driving through Gosfield on his way to Braintree at 2.30am on Saturday, when he noticed a car with its hazard lights on and a woman standing beside it.

The former Notley High School and Braintree College pupil stopped and got out of his car to help but was suddenly pounced upon.

He said: “They pulled my hoodie over my head so I couldn’t see."
