Radioactive waste from a third power plant will be stored at Bradwell under revised plans, it has been announced.
Bradwell power station looks set to receive waste from Sizewell in addition to waste it is already going to receive from Dungeness, if the latest plans get the go ahead.
Andy Blowers, chairman of the Blackwater Against New Nuclear Group (BANNG), said: “This is a volte-face on the part of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Magnox.
“A precedent has been set for Bradwell to become a dumping ground for dangerous radioactive wastes from other sites for the indefinite future.”
The waste is known as intermediate level (ILW), which means it has radioactivity levels that do not generate enough heat to require special storage or disposal facilities.
But like other radioactive waste, it still needs to be contained to protect workers from radiation.
Magnox chief operating officer England Tony Moore said: “Safety and the environment remain our top priorities as we consider amending the Magnox waste strategy to safely deliver the best value for the taxpayer."
Magnox is talking to stakeholders before decisions are made.
