A Burnham mum-of-two waited hours in agony for an ambulance only for the town’s own emergency vehicles to sit empty at their base.

Andrew Lodge branded the situation "absolutely disgraceful" after his sister was “violently sick and screaming in pain” while waiting about three hours for an ambulance.

Mr Lodge, of Burnham, then spotted the town’s own ambulance and paramedic vehicle empty at their base in Queens Road.

The so-called "24-hour" ambulance was brought to Burnham in September 2014 after years of campaigning.

Essex Locality Director Rob Ashford said: “Efforts were made to send an ambulance as soon as possible, and we regret that we weren’t able to provide the service that was expected.

"We are working hard to increase the number of frontline staff which includes recruiting more student paramedics."
