A man accused of murder allegedly shouted “that’s what you get” while his victim lay dying outside a Braintree flat, a court has heard.

Luke Eva, 24, is accused of stabbing Michael Haastrup to death in a flat in Cressing Road last April.

Eva, of Avondale Drive in Leigh, denies murder but admits possessing an offensive weapon.

Chelmsford Crown Court heard harrowing testimony from a woman who rang 999 and fought in vain to save 24-year-old Mr Haastrup’s life.

Abigail Pollard told the court via videolink she called police after hearing a commotion in the flat above, next door to her stepmother.

Miss Pollard said she went upstairs to investigate and saw Michael Haastrup standing by the door of a flat holding a “clawhammer” and shouting “you are going to die.”

Miss Pollard said it was understood by herself and others that drugs were being dealt out of the flat where Eva frequently visited.

Transcripts of her subsequent 999 call revealed the call had not ended when she went back outside and allegedly saw Eva using a tea towel to wipe blood off the door frame.

Eva was then recorded saying to Miss Pollard: “Hey, what are you calling old Bill? Don’t need no old Bill on this.”

In response, Miss Pollard told him she had called the police but could not remember his reaction.

“All I can remember is him wiping the blood while he was saying it,” she said.

Miss Pollard said she then went down to the street where Michael Haastrup was laying on the pavement.

She said she tended to Mr Haastrup while James McGowan, Eva and another man were “fighting.”

She said: “He (Haastrup) walked himself over with our help to a garden wall and he must have fainted and I tried to grab his head before he hit the floor.”

Miss Pollard said at this point Eva became involved: “He shouted out ‘that’s what you get’ and I turned round and shouted at him.

“At that point I was trying to find where all the blood was coming from.

“I did St John’s training so I needed to apply pressure and keep his airways clear.

“I was shouting at him and he wasn’t responding and I needed to keep him awake.”

Mr Haastrup was later taken to Broomfield Hospital with stab wounds to the heart and left thigh.

He died the following morning.

The trial continues.
