A driver is starting four years imprisonment a year after a fatal crash.
Nicholas Weston, 22, of Pedlars Path, Danbury, was sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court on Friday after admitting guilt to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving.
In September 2013 Weston, while carrying four passengers, lost control of his Ford Escort van, striking a tree at Leighams Road, Bicknacre.
Passenger William Andrews, 18, of Shirebourn Vale, South Woodham Ferrers died and second passenger, Joshua Cumberland, 19, of Drywoods, South Woodham Ferrers was seriously injured.
Weston is disqualified from driving for eight years and will take an extended test to drive again.
