A man who was made an African Prince in honour of his charity football work is still has spoken of his love for his home club, where he has been a volunteer for more than 40 years.

Syd Wells, of Viking Road, moved to Maldon on a Thursday in 1971 but by the Saturday had already volunteered to be a coach at the Maldon Saints Football Club and has been volunteering with the club ever since.

In his time with the club he has been a coach, a referee and a manager and still helps out now, at the age of 86.

“It’s been a wonderful experience and I still help out now,” he said.
