A well known builder and funeral director will be remembered as a kind and generous man.

George Birkin, known as Sam, recently died aged 90 after six months of declining health.

He was born into the A Birkin and Sons family building business in Coggeshall, growing up to specialise in carpentry.

Mr Birkin joined the family business when he left school, aged about 16, and never really retired.

His family said: “Like so many local builders the family took on the role of funeral director, a profession Sam may not have chosen but his calm, kind manner suited the role so well, helping local people at the time they most needed.

“A kind and generous man to so many in his lifetime, fond memories will remain with those who knew and loved him.

“May the help and knowledge he passed to so many be his legacy for their future.

“He was a fun loving man who ‘lived to work.’”

A celebration of Mr Birkin's life will be held at St Peter ad Vincula Church in the village tomorrow at 3pm to which everyone is welcome.

Donations in his memory can be made to the British Heart Foundation or Alzheimer’s Society.

Cheques made payable to either charity can be sent to A Birkin & Sons.
