A NEW headteacher has vowed to improve a school’s Ofsted rating and raise educational standards for all pupils.

Robert Garrett has been appointed as the new head of Harwich and Dovercourt High School following Nigel Mountford’s retirement in April.

He was principal at Long Field Academy in Melton, Leicestershire before leaving in April after eight years.

Whilst at the helm he oversaw the transition from a school for 11 to 14 year olds to an academy for 11 to 16 year olds with a post 16 education centre.

Mr Garrett also helped the school achieve the best GCSE results in its history in 2013 with 67 per cent of pupils achieving five A* to C grades including English and Maths.

He said: “The ultimate goal now is to raise the educational standards for all the students at Harwich and Dovercourt High School and also give them vocational opportunities to broaden their pathways.”

Ofsted said the school “requires improvement” in May, but Mr Garrett is confident he can raise the grade to good before the next inspection.
