AN angry councillor has hit out at the state of an iconic pond which has turned green, branding it disgraceful and embarrassing.

Manningtree Town Councillor Mark Morsley is furious at the look of the water feature on the town’s market square which has caused concern about the wellbeing and visibility of the fish.

He is also dismayed that only three of the jets on the sprinkler system are working at the site on the corner of High Street and Brook Street.

Tendring Council is in charge of the upkeep of the pond and Mr Morsley is hoping something will be done to improve its look.

“It is in a disgraceful state and only three of the jets on the sprinkler system are working,” he said.

“I was amazed it has gotten to the point because it is such a focal point of the town.

“What is the point of having a pond if you cannot see the fish and the sprinklers do not work?

“It is an embarrassment.”

Tendring Council’s environment boss Nick Turner has confirmed a team are working to remove the green colouring from the water which has been caused recent by high temperatures.

“There is an issue with exceptional algae growth at the moment caused by the very hot weather and we had a team working at the pond on Friday removing weeds and other material,” said Mr Turner.

“The team is due back this week to carry out further work to ensure all the jets on the fountain are working properly as we normally do as part of the maintenance programme."
