Clacton: Phil catches a whopper
Whopper: Phil and his catch.
Whopper: Phil and his catch.

It was this big, honest...

In Phil Stockwell's case, it actually was.

The 35-year-old from Totlands Drive in Clacton caught this 6ft, 90lbs wels catfish on a trip to Norfolk last week.

A fisherman since he was four, Phil has never landed anything this big in England before.

"The fish took the bait at 5pm just as I had put the kettle on!" said the father-of-two, who lives with partner Caroline.

"It sped off across the lake and pulled 50 metres of line off the spool on its first run.

"After 20 minutes I managed to get the fish to my side of the lake when it broke the surface.

"I really piled on the pressure to lift the cat's head up and she slid into the net."

He added: "I was amazed when I saw the size of it - it was an absolute monster."

Phil, a printing manager, says that the average size of wels catfish in this country are about 40 to 60 lbs, with the largest usually about 110.

He put the fish back in the lake after the catch.

"I haven't got an oven big enough!" he said.
