A FIRE which broke out at a flat in Clacton this evening is believed to have been caused by a faulty electric blanket.
The blaze started in the bedroom of a groundfloor flat in Castle Road just after 6pm.
Firefighters used breathing apparatus to get into the smoke-filled property.
They were at the scene for an hour making the flat safe.
Assistant divisional officer Chris Noakes said: “Fires like this show how dangerous faulty electrical blankets can be."
He added: "“Older electric blankets can be a real problem and no one should use and electric blanket which is more than 10 years-old. If you are unsure about your blanket it is important that you get it checked before plugging it in."
