Council evicts illegal campervans

ILLEGAL campers have been removed from Clacton's greensward following complaints from angry residents.

Tendring Council said it took urgent action to remove the campers in Marine Parade West and West Road.

The authority used new powers under to issue notices to three vehicles. It is the first time the council has ever used the law to move on campers.

Lynda McWilliams, cabinet member for environmental services, said the council decided to take action to send out a clear message to those camping illegally in the town.

“This is a seaside resort with many campsites where people can legally park their campervans and caravans – the public highway is not the right place for them,” she said.

“We do not want people camping on the seafront with awnings onto the greensward - and we have had complaints from residents who are unhappy about this practice.”

The campers were given 48 hours to move on but left before the deadline.

Update. They were there at 1pm. They either came back quickly or never went away.

Indeed martin sell, counted at least 5, still there at 8pm.
Must look again in the morning now,
you have me eager to find out more on this free holiday resort caravan parking story.
Must admit though, was explained that if parked caravans are taxed & insured for road use, then being parked on a highway is breaking no laws.

Still there this morning Mr Anory. Like you I thought it was not illegal to park along greensward. How do they get moved on Airshow days? I am sure someone will read this & enlighten me.

Its like a game show this, Martin,
Friday afternoon, 5 campers still on holiday for free.
I believe on airshow days, hundreds of no parking cones are placed in the road.
Not sure if the local papers post a legit ban on it`s "official notices"
sections?

They are parked leagally so why move them? There is no law against overnight stay, which is the to stop it happening again.

There used to be a guy that lived in his coach sized caravan, used to park all over the place, even parked opposite a school, in a bus layby, infact anywhere he chanced to stay.
He eventually got moved on, as his caravans registration gave him away in the end.
He treated the counties roads and infrastructure the same way the travelling comunity does, while county rate payers footed the bill.

You know Martin, I kinda guess TDC might be talking about another group that park in Hastings Avenue.
On re-reading the story, I`ve never seen any parking at all in West Avenue?
Your thoughts.

I still think the article referred to the seafront. It states "we do not want people camping on the seafront with awnings onto the greensward ".

They were still there Sunday at 1.00pm. One consideration is that although they may be 'road legal', what ae they doing with their waste products? In particular, toilet waste. Why should they get away effectively living for free and possibly causing an eyesore on the Greensward (washing hanging out, etc.). One solution would be to impose a local bye-law banning over-night parking.

Perhaps they could move them onto a 'travellers site''..for travellers that dont travel...... The Tendring council offices at Weeley have a wonderful flat, tarmaced area, beautiiful views and well lit at night. Bet they would be moved on quicker from there!
