RESIDENTS across Tendring are being warned not to fall for a council tax scam which tricks them into giving out bank details over the phone.
A woman became suspicious after being called at home about a council tax refund.
She refused to give out her bank details and rang Tendring Council to see if the call was genuine.
“She was told that her council tax band was being reduced and her bank account was required to pay in a refund,” said the council's Nigel Borley.
“We were able to assure her that none of our staff had called her and that it was probably a scam. She had not even requested a reduction in her council tax band.”
He added: “We would not be asking people for their bank details over the phone in this way and would suggest in general that residents do not give them out if requested."
Anyone receiving similar calls can ring the council on 01255 686822 to check if it is genuine.
