I'll never forgive my son's attacker

THE father of a former barman who was left brain damaged by a savage assault says he will never forgive his son's attacker.

Barry Jervis, from Clacton, spent three days on a life support machine following the attack in November 2007.

He suffered a blow to the back of the head outside the Quality Diner in Rosemary Road.

This week a man with a history of booze-fuelled violence admitted causing grievous bodily harm.

Simon Barras, 29, denied a second charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent when he appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court. He claimed he punched his victim just once in the head which made him to fall to the ground and suffer serious head injuries.

The second charge was withdrawn but will remain on Barras's file.

Michael Fraser, prosecuting, said Barry's injuries were "of life-changing significance and extremely serious".

The court heard Barras had convictions stretching back nine years for threatening behaviour, actual bodily harm, battery and assaulting a police officer.

Judge Christopher Ball QC said he now faced a likely jail sentence.

Speaking after the hearing, Barry's father, Malcolm, 60, said Barras had wrecked his son's life.

Barras, of Knottingley, West Yorkshire, was released on conditional bail and will be sentenced in early March.
