Tendring receives £1million regeneration boost

TENDRING has received a grant of £1million to help boost regeneration in the district.

Tendring Council is one of 15 local authorities in England which will receive a share of an £11million Government cash pot.

The authority’s regeneration team was successful in its bid to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) for cash from its Coastal Change Pathfinder fund, which will be paid out over the next two years.

In Tendring the cash will be used to produce a coastal strategy, which could see a series of schemes including the removal of derelict properties in flood risk areas such as Jaywick.

It will also include schemes in Harwich and Walton.

Council leader Neil Stock, who is also cabinet member for community partnerships and renewal, said: “There is £255,583 for 2009/2010 and then a further £744,417 for the following year under this initiative.

“It will mean that along with our partners Essex County Council and the Haven Gateway Partnership we will be able to deliver a number of regeneration projects to benefit our residents and businesses.”

He said the next stage will be to review those various schemes to work out the best way of spending the money.

“This really is an early Christmas present in terms of a major cash boost to help to regenerate Tendring,” he added.

Mr Stock said the council will be working closely with Lord Hanningfield, as chairman of the newly-formed Coastal Renaissance Partnership Board.

Lord Hanningfield, leader of Essex County Council, said: “This is a great way to kick-start our ambitious regeneration partnership with Tendring.

“The money is a real boost and the Coastal Renaissance Board will ensure every penny benefits our coastal communities.”
