Tendring: Village home wins district design award

A HOUSE in a rural village has been awarded Tendring’s prestigious design award.

Romford House, in Tendring village, was named as the best designed building in the district for the past two years.

Tendring Council, which organises the bi-annual competition, said the residential property was a clear favourite with the judges, who said it was “a very fine example of modern contemporary design of a well thought out extension. The attention to detail and build quality was first class.”

The winning architect was Karen Sardell, from Andrew Claybonre Architects, and the builder was PG Oxley.

The winners will receive a plaque to go on the property and will also go forward to the Regional Planning Achievement Award Scheme.

Sarah Candy, cabinet member for planning, said: “Although only in its second term, the design award is proving a successful initiative.

“The aim is to raise the bar and set new standards for buildings in Tendring for the longer term and create a legacy for future generations.”

Two other buildings were commended by the judges - Esplanade Court in Frinton and Barnets Reach in Green Lane, Walton.

Barnets Reach is a group of terraced houses which was described by the judging panel as “good fun”.

The other finalists were Lawford Place in Lawford and Beth Chatto Tea Rooms in Elmstead Market.

The first joint winners in 2007 were the Maltings development in Manningtree and Bishops Park College, Clacton. The awards will be staged again in two year’s time.
