PROPOSALS for major leisure projects across Tendring have been axed.
Tendring Council has announced it will not be going ahead with plans to borrow up to £1.25 million to overhaul facilities in Walton, Dovercourt and Harwich – and residents are being told to get on their bikes or go for a country walk if they want to keep fit instead.
The announcement follows revelations two weeks ago that the council intended to scrap a series of schemes after a secret internal council document was handed to the Gazette.
The council’s former Tendring First administration had wanted to copy Clacton Leisure Centre’s Lifestyles gymnasium project at other facilities across the district, but the new Tory leadership have now ditched the scheme.
Finance boss Peter Halliday said instead of pumping council taxpayers' cash into sports centres, the authority wants people to exercise outdoors instead.
